01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled on the vibrant South Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans, Cooter Brown's Tavern is a must-visit destination for lovers of classic American fare, exceptional oysters, and friendly, no-frills bar dining. This laidback oyster bar and American restaurant perfectly captures the spirit of New Orleans hospitality, where hearty comfort food and perfectly poured drinks come together in a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Dive into their signature menu offerings and prepare to tantalize your taste buds. Their beer battered fries are a revelation—crispy on the outside, tender inside, with the option to elevate them to gooey indulgence with the cheese fries, featuring a house blend of melted cheddar and jack cheeses. If you're craving bold flavors, the gravy cheese fries smothered in savory roast beef gravy or the loaded fries topped with pulled pork, sour cream, caramelized onions, and jalapeños will not disappoint. Each bite offers a comforting richness that feels like a warm embrace on a cool New Orleans night.

The sandwich selection is equally satisfying. The Chicken Parmesan sandwich layers a crispy fried chicken thigh with creamy provolone, parmesan, and tangy marinara, delivering an Italian-American classic with Southern soul. Lobster lovers and seafood aficionados will appreciate the Oyster on Bun, where fried oysters nestle between fresh buns, dressed with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and pickles—each mouthful a delightful contrast of crunchy and creamy textures. For those seeking authentic local flavors, the slow-cooked Pulled Pork Sandwich topped with tangy buttermilk slaw and pickles encapsulates the essence of Southern BBQ done right.

Beyond the food, the tavern itself exudes an effortlessly cool vibe that guests have treasured. Regulars praise the genuinely friendly staff who make you feel like an old friend, particularly E.B., a standout server celebrated for her stellar service. The bartenders are masters of their craft, serving up fresh drafts and expertly mixed drinks that keep the good times flowing. On Tuesday nights, the half-off oyster special is a beloved treat, and you'll appreciate seeing oysters shucked fresh right at the bar, adding an engaging show to your dining experience.

While Cooter Brown's offers all the charm of a neighborhood hangout, some practical considerations include limited restroom facilities and a casual setup where drinks and food orders are placed separately. Yet the robust flavors, approachable prices, and authentic atmosphere more than compensate for these minor inconveniences.

For visitors exploring New Orleans via the iconic St. Charles streetcar line, Cooter Brown’s serves as the perfect final stop to unwind, indulge in comfort food classics, and soak up genuine local culture. Whether you're craving crispy fries smothered in cheese and gravy, an oyster sandwich bursting with ocean-fresh flavor, or simply a cold Abita beer poured just right, Cooter Brown's Tavern delivers an experience rich in flavor and down-to-earth Southern charm.

The food is pretty good. The service is also stellar. E.B. is my favorite, she's amazing. Ask for her she's usually in the back bar. The burgers are good but could use a bit of seasoning. The bathroom situation is not good at all. Still worth a visit.

If you’re taking the St. Charles streetcar all the way to the end, make this your final stop. A friend sent us here for the oysters and the vibe, and I’m very glad we listened. It’s a classic, laid-back hang with genuinely friendly staff and zero pretension. We lucked out and came on a Tuesday when oysters are half off, and I only regret not having room for more. They shuck them right at the bar, so grab a drink and settle in. It does get busy and there will probably be a line, but it moved fast. About 20 minutes and absolutely worth it. Bonus detail I loved: the wild wood carvings of celebrities all over the walls. Our bartender filled us in on the backstory, so don’t be shy about asking. Good oysters, good people, good energy. Exactly what you want at the end of the line.

Sweet little Baby Jesus all snug in his manager! The Abita on tap is so fresh and fantastic! I had the Purple Haze and Strawberry. The beer selection as a whole is supreme. I jumped off and then back on the St Charles streetcar easily to visit Cooter Brown's. Chowed down on some great gravy cheese fries and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Place is intriguing, food is great. You order your drinks separately from your food. The guy that day who took our order was a sour puss, was not friendly whats so ever. But don't let that stop you from going here , the food is good.

Yesterday we went there by the recommendation of a friend. We had a wonderful time. The Catfish Po Boy was nice and fresh, the fries were some of the best fries that I have had. The fried pickles were also the best fried pickles that I have ever had. The bartender was an incredible mixologist and made perfect mocktails. They also know how to properly pour a draft. Everything came out in a timely fashion and there is lots of cool and quaint decor. The bathrooms were actually super clean and the food came out quickly. My only complaint was that the oysters served at the bar were too big and should have been used for sandwiches only. I don't like having to chew them in multiple bites. They were fresh though and the toppings for them were divine. If I come again I won't get the oysters but everything else we had was beyond exceptional and the oysters were not even bad, they were just too big for my preference but other people may find that very appealing. Very affordable prices and large portions. We were very happy with our experience.

One of my favorite spots. They have the best corned beef sandwhich ive ever had in my life called the Irish Channel and an amazing selection of beers both on tap and in cans/bottles. My favorite is the Blackcurrant Sour Noir. You can get a small or large size for your beer which is very nice. Order food at the counter and drinks from the bar. Variety of indoor seating as well as outdoor. Open late and never disappointed

Great bar with large food and tap beer menu and fresh oysters. Will definitely return to try more food options. I have never seen a corned beef sandwich like they serve. The piece of corned beef on the sandwich is probably and inch think and was very tender, pretty salty but not too much. Everything is counter service. A separate counter for drinks, food and oysters but once you put your card on file you can order from any counter by just giving your last name. Very very rustic in the best way.

Spent a lot of time at Cooters in the early 90’s and have gone back since when in town for cheese fries. Still a cool place with great beer selection. Bad news is the cheese fries are no longer sliced oval potatoes but hard fried long fries. And no Tony Chachere’s. Bring back the old potatoes please!
